Jungle Dogs review and meals

I received a free packet of Jungle Dogs to review. Jungle Dogs are a chilled pork hot dog from the brand PEK. They claim to contain more meat than other leading hot dog brands, with no mechanically recovered meat and no artificial colours or flavours.

They also sent me a savoury pancake recipe using Jungle Dogs, but I decided to come up with my own ideas. Something a bit different to just serving hot dogs in the traditional style.

First I made a hot dog pizza on a wrap. The boys have got very keen on wrap pizzas since I first tried making one during the Lunch Less Ordinary challenge last year.

Hot Dog Pizza Wrap

Ingredients (serves 1 – 2 children)

1 wrap
50g tomato purée
1 Jungle Dog
100g grated mozzarella

Chop the Jungle Dog into slices.
Spread tomato purée on the wrap.
Cover with grated mozzarella.
Top with the sliced Jungle Dog.
Cook under a moderate heat grill for a few minutes until the cheese is bubbling and starting to brown.
Serve and enjoy.

And secondly I cooked some of them in cheesy puff pastry.

Hot Dog Cheese Puffs

Ingredients (serves 2 children)

100g puff pastry
30g grated cheddar,
3 Jungle Dogs
1 tablespoon of milk

Roll out the pastry.
Cut pastry into 3 pieces.
Scatter half of the grated cheddar over one piece of pastry.
Cover with next piece of pastry and scatter rest of the grated cheddar over this.
Cover with final piece of pastry.
Reroll the cheesy pastry into a long rectangle, the width of a Jungle Dog.
Cut cheesy pastry into 3 squares.
Position each Jungle Dog on a pastry square 1cm away from the edge.
Brush edge of pastry with milk and stick to Jungle Dog.
Roll up, brushing final edge to seal.
Place on greased baking sheet, with sealed edge downwards.
Repeat with other 2 Jungle Dogs.
Brush tops with remaining milk.
Bake in preheated fan oven at 180 degrees for 15 minutes.
Cut each Hot Dog Cheese Puff into 2 pieces.
Serve and enjoy.

And I also tried using some in an omelette.

Hot Dog Omelette

Ingredients (serves 2 children)

2 eggs
2 Jungle Dogs
1tbsp cream
50g grated cheddar
2 tsp oil

Chop the Jungle Dogs into slices.
Beat the eggs and cream.
Add the cheese and Jungle Dogs.
Heat oil in frying pan.
Pour in egg mixture.
Once the omelette has set, turn over to cook other side.
Serve with toast and enjoy.

They currently retail at Asda at £1 for a 180g packet of 6 hot dogs and are also stocked at very large branches of Tesco. This sounds good value in my opinion and I believe it is a fairly consistent price with other brands of chilled hot dogs. However one word of warning they are not suitable for anyone with a soya allergy.

Son 1 gave them the thumbs up, but son 2 rejected all the meals I cooked with the Jungle Dogs saying he prefers sausages. So I tried his portions and I enjoyed them.

You can also find some kids activities on the Jungle Dogs website. Son 1 scored over 1000 on the banana catch game.

Disclosure.  This post is a review of products I was sent for free.  All opinions are my own.

The wrap pizzas sound great! I’m not sure Ben and Chloe would like hot dogs really – they’re fussy so and sos.
Thanks for linking up with #TriedTested
