Son1 read the synopsis of The Blood of Olympus and decided that he wanted a copy of the book to review. I asked him if he was sure as the book did look too old for him and previously he had persuaded me to read The Luck Uglies to him and his brother, being slightly daunted by that.
So his free copy of the book arrived back in October. And give him his due, he did begin reading it himself but he was struggling. The book is 500 pages and no illustrations. By December he was about a third through the book, when he gave up and asked me or his dad to read the rest to him. And no wonder, he found it hard. It is full of mythological words which he won’t have come across previously. There is a lengthy glossary of these at the back. Having now read part of the book myself, I would suggest that this book would be better targetted at teens and adults, rather than at children, aged 9+.
The Blood of Olympus is about seven heroic demigods, some Greek and some Roman, on a quest to defeat Gaia, the Earth Mother.
Here is a video review of The Blood of Olympus by son1.
The Blood of Olympus, written by Rick Riordan and published by Puffin is currently retailing on Amazon for £6.99 compared to a RRP of £14.99 for a hardback copy. It is also available as a Kindle edition or Audio CD and is due to be released in paperback later this year. It is the fifth and final book in the bestselling Heroes of Olympus series. It is targetted at children, age 9+ but as I said above I think it is probably more suited to teens, since son1 is usually quite happy to read age 9+ books himself. It would be a great read for the right age audience, but son1 was rather put off by its complexity. I think he would perhaps appreciate seeing one of the Percy Jackson movies and then waiting 3 or 4 years before attempting to read another of these books.
However he did enjoy trying some of the fun activities on the website of the author Rick Riordan.
Here’s the trailer.

Hi, Just wondering as a fan of the Heroes of Olympus series. Did your son start at Blood of Olympus? Because it is the last book in Rick Riordan’s second series. I think you should have your son start with the Percy Jackson and the Olympians, which is the prequel series and is more targeted toward kids, but works really for any age. The first book is “The Lightning Thief” You probably might already be aware of this, but I’m mentioning it just in case. Keep up the great work with your blog! 😀

Thank you. No this was the first book by Rick Riordan that he had attempted. Give him a few more years and I’m sure, he’ll try the others but he is now reading Wimpy Kid
