Special Spoons review and giveaway

For my 100th blog post I have another review and giveaway. And what could be more fitting than something Special.

95% is an online shop combining Danish & Dutch designs to create a comprehensive and stylish mix of iconic and modern home accessories and gifts that are just distinctly different, fully functional, long lasting, well made and simply stunning to look at. Their motto is Buy Once, Buy Well!

I have received a free pack of Special Spoons to review from 95%. What are Special Spoons I hear you ask? They are those very useful spoons that are always found to be missing in your kitchen drawer when desperately needed! In fact these “Special Spoons” were, in times gone by, a part of every cutlery canteen, though nowadays they are almost forgotten. Special Spoons is a set of spoons for all those jars that everyone stores in the refrigerator.

The set comprises of a small spicy spoon, a pickle fork, an olive spoon, a toast spreader and a jam spoon. The only similar item I already possess is an antique pickle fork which used to belong to one of my great aunts. But I do remember that both my grandmothers had two small spoons in their cutlery canteens for salt and mustard.

The Special Spoons are supplied in a flat pack format, similar to a model kit, so I had to twist them to remove from the plastic frame. Reasonably easy to do apart from the ones at either end which were slightly more difficult to remove. Alternatively you could use scissors or a sharp knife.

The set I received were fuchsia, so will be easy to spot once in the drawer. You can choose from fuchsia, black, red or yellow. It is also worth noting that they are dishwasher safe, unlike my great aunt’s pickle fork.

And on with the testing. The olive spoon worked perfectly. The draining holes in it are an excellent idea. I didn’t have anything particularly spicy to test the small spicy spoon on, so I just tried it in my jar of Branston pickle. It will be ideal for items like mustard and chilli sauce. I wasn’t so impressed with the pickle fork, as I was unable to stab a pickled onion with it, which I can easily do with my existing pickle fork.  However I got round this problem by using the olive spoon to get a pickled onion instead. One of the pictures on the box shows that the pickle fork works fine on pickled gherkins which are much softer than pickled onions. I used the toast spreader to spread houmous on a cracker. This worked fine except some of the houmous remained on the spreader, so personally I will probably continue to use a knife for spreading, to avoid wastage. And finally I used the jam spoon to get a spoonful of my Dad’s delicious homemade cucamelon jam.

These Special Spoons are manufactured by Royal VKB, a division of the Royal Delft Group and they have been designed by Ineke Hans. They retail at £9.95 per set, which equates to £1.99 per spoon, which is good value in my opinion. You may see other Royal VKB items sold in the 95% shop here.

And I’m hosting a rafflecopter competition to giveaway a pack of Special Spoons courtesy of 95% to one lucky winner.

Macarons Galore Review and Giveaway

A large box marked fragile arrived in the post yesterday.  Inside carefully wrapped in bubble wrap, was a small attractive package containing 4 macarons.  They looked exquisite and I couldn’t wait to taste them.  I was tempted to scoff them all myself whilst everyone else was out, but I restrained myself so that we could share them.

Macarons Galore

Macarons Galore

Raspberry, chocolate, pistachio and vanilla flavours.  We all agreed they were delicious.  A real treat.  Macarons are not to be confused with macaroons, an entirely different confection.  Macarons are tiny meringues with a crispy outer shell and soft centre with a creamy filling in the middle.

These macarons were made by Benedicte Alix of Macarons Galore.  You may see details of pricing and full range of flavours on the Macarons Galore facebook page. A box of these would make a lovely Christmas present.  They also make bespoke orders for special occasions.

And I’m hosting a rafflecopter competition to giveaway a box of 5 delicious macarons courtesy of Macarons Galore to one lucky winner.
