Yumbox review and giveaway

What is a Yumbox I hear you ask? It is a new style of lunch box, specifically designed to be leak-proof and to assist with portion control. And I have received a free Yumbox to review in a colour and style of my choice. So I chose the Panino style with 4 compartments in Tutti Frutti blue, because I knew blue would appeal best to the boys.

The Yumbox comprises an exterior latched box and a removeable inner tray. The Panino style tray is divided into a large compartment (for a sandwich or salad say), 2 smaller compartments and a dip well. It is designed so that the silicone lid seals all compartments individually, so no need for plastic bags or clingfilm. I like that as I’m all for anything green. And I loved the Eat Well design on the tray.

The boys have school lunches and as it is too cold for a picnic at this time of year, I tested it out on son2 with a packed lunch at home. He was delighted to try it out, but he did need help to open it. I did find it a bit of a squeeze to fit his sandwich into the largest compartment. But I put that down to my slices of homemade bread being both larger and thicker than most shop-bought bread. There was still space at the edge of that compartment to add 2 baby corns, a tomato and babybel cheese, so it wasn’t due to the compartment size. Then I filled one of the smaller compartments with sliced cucumber and grapes. I put crisps in the other smaller compartment and some houmous in the dip well.

After closing the box, I gave it a good shake to simulate being carried in a school bag and it certainly lived up to expectation of being leak-proof. No soggy crisps covered in houmous.

I did note that you wouldn’t be able to include bulky items like an apple without chopping it up, which is a shame as an apple obviously stays freshest whole.

Son2 really enjoyed having his lunch in the Yumbox at home, even if I didn’t make it like a bento style picture. There I’ve thrown another word into this post, which you may not all be familiar with. Bento is a Japanese packed lunch arranged to look like a picture, which is now becoming increasingly popular over here. And as I wouldn’t have time to make a packed lunch like that normally, I chose not to do so this time either, although there are some fab Bento lunches from other bloggers over on the Yumbox website.

So to summarise, both son2 and I love this lunch box.

The Yumbox retails at £24.95 each. This is quite pricey compared to other lunchboxes, but it does have some great unique features. As well as the Panino style, there is also the Classic style with 6 compartments. And you can even buy a spare tray at £12.50 although that does seem rather superfluous in my opinion. It measures approx. 22 x 15 x 5 cms and weighs 490g and is BPA-free and phthalates-free. It is not thermal, but it is designed to fit in a standard size thermal lunch bag if you are including foods which you wish to keep cold. It is dishwasher safe, but hand washing the outer box is recommended to preserve the seal.
